2025 Toronto Theatre Awards Announcement

TORONTO, ON   –     The Toronto Theatre Awards are proud to announce the recipients of the 2025 Toronto Theatre Awards. The 2025 Toronto Theatre Awards recipients were chosen from ballots cast by the voting members of the Toronto Theatre Awards. The voting body consisted of theatre critics, arts workers and invited members of the theatre going public and is meant to represent the Toronto theatre going audience as a whole.

Tarragon Theatre and The Musical Stage Company's new musical, After the Rain, led all Toronto productions with nine Toronto Theatre Awards. After the Rain was recognized for Outstanding Production of a Musical, as well as Outstanding New Production. The company of After the Rain was recognized for Outstanding Performance of an Ensemble in a Musical; while Annika Tupper, Andrew Penner, Deborah Hay and Suzy Wilde were all recognized for their individual performances in the musical. Behind the scenes, Marie Farsi was recognized for directing the musical, and the production design team of After the Rain was recognized for Outstanding Production Design of a Musical.

Amongst plays for the 2024-2025 season, Why Not Theatre and Canadian Stage's production of Mahabharata (Parts 1 & 2) was recognized for Outstanding Production of a Play as well as Outstanding Performance of an Ensemble in a Play. While Miriam Fernandes was recognized for her individual performance in the multi-part epic. 2025 also saw the return of Kim's Convenience to a Toronto stage. The outstanding production was recognized with two Toronto Theatre Awards for the lead performance by Ins Choi and for its director, Weyni Mengesha. Also receiving recognition for their individual performance on a Toronto stage in the 2024-2025 season were Jan Alexandra Smith, for her performance in Dinner with the Duchess and Peter Fernandes for his featured performance in The Bidding War.

Special Recognition is bestowed upon productions, performances, works or achievements, which were not nominated, but were deemed by the Toronto Theatre Awards to be deserving of recognition. Special Recognition could be for any production or performance including those who were ineligible for the 2025 Toronto Theatre Awards.  These can include productions or performances in dance, opera, cabaret, comedy, etc, for which there are no eligible categories.   These can also include recognition for playwriting, choreography, etc.  It can also include productions outside of Toronto and recent remountings which were otherwise ineligible. The Toronto Theatre Awards chose to bestow Special Recognition to Thumbs Up Theatre Toronto, who for the last 15 years, has been organizing meet-ups for Toronto theatre goers, truly helping build the Toronto theatre community. The Toronto Theatre Awards also chose to recognize Jackie Richardson for her powerhouse of a performance in The Musical Stage Company's Uncovered: U2 & The Rolling Stones.
